Nolan’s Odyssey Triumphs Box Office Battle

It’s been an epic, triumphant weekend for Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, whose 13th feature, The Odyssey, has seen a glorious box-office release. The film, adapted from Homer’s 8th-century epic poem of the same title, narrates the journey of a Greek warrior as he returns home to his wife and son after winning the Trojan War. Matt Damon leads the cast in his third appearance in a Nolan film, accompanied by Himesh Patel, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

The Odyssey has reportedly grossed $246 million from its opening weekend, with a domestic gross of £124 million and an international one of $139 million. The film was made from an estimated budget of $250 million, making it one of the most expensive films of Nolan’s career, matching The Dark Knight Rises’ budget, with the director previously citing the success and award recognition seen by his last film, Oppenheimer, as the source of such generous funding.

Reports also show The Odyssey comes second for the best opening weekend seen by a Nolan release, following 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises’ $249 million and topping 2008’s The Dark Knight’s $158.4 million. It has also topped Universal’s estimated opening weekend gross by $146 million,

The adaptation has also made history by being the first feature film captured entirely on IMAX to deliver a larger-scale and louder cinematic experience.

Additional box office news sees Pixar’s Toy Story 5 hit $958 million as a global box office gross, with an international gross of $527 million and a domestic one of $430 million. Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action remake of Moana has just hit the $178 million mark for its second weekend, having disappointed the studio and cost it around $125 million in losses due to its budget of $250 million, yet only gathering $95 million for its opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic, Michael, only has to make another $8.650757 million to match or beat The Super Mario Galaxy Movie for 2026’s highest-grossing release, with the former currently standing at $1,002,041,734 and the latter $1,010,692,491. Michael has become the highest-grossing biopic ever made as well as the first one to ever hit the billion-dollar mark.
